As of July 2025, the municipality of Comrat hosts a new Intergenerational Center – a space dedicated to fostering dialogue between generations, strengthening social cohesion, and encouraging active participation in community life.
The center offers a structured setting for direct interaction between young people and older adults, through joint activities that promote knowledge exchange, mutual respect, and collaboration at the local level. The initiative aims to build stronger ties between generations and to support inclusive, equitable engagement within the community.
“Each age group has its own needs and characteristics. Only through open dialogue can we overcome stereotypes and negative perceptions, and build meaningful connections between people and generations. Older people are grandparents, young people are grandchildren – and together, they form the families and communities that keep this country united,” stated Karina Nersesyan, UNFPA Representative in Moldova.
Moldcell Foundation supports the operation of the Intergenerational Center by providing laptops for educational activities and digital inclusion. The donated equipment will be used in upcoming intergenerational sessions and workshops. This contribution reflects the Moldcell Foundation’s mission to help build an inclusive society, where every generation has an active role and contributes to the common good.
“In a society that is changing rapidly, spaces like this become anchors of stability. And when they connect generations, the impact is long-lasting. Our contribution is both practical and purposeful – because investing in people remains the most important driver of progress,” said Irina Strajescu, Executive Director of Moldcell Foundation.
The Comrat Intergenerational Center is part of a broader initiative implemented in 10 localities across the Republic of Moldova, including the ATU Gagauzia and the left bank of the Nistru River. The program is based on a tested Swiss methodology that promotes intergenerational dialogue through structured conversation, empathic listening, and community-based problem-solving.
At the opening event, Minister of Labour and Social Protection Alexei Buzu shared a message of support:
“This center is not just about dialogue. It is an investment in a more united and resilient Moldova. We hope the Comrat example will inspire similar initiatives in other parts of the country.”
The Intergenerational Center in Comrat was launched as part of the project “Strengthening Social Cohesion in the Republic of Moldova through Dialogue and Community Empowerment”, implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and with the support of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Comrat City Hall, HelpAge Moldova and Moldcell Foundation.
